Car Safety Tips
November 14th, 2008Road safety is no accident. Whether you’re on a road trip or driving around the city, the following car safety tips are designed to keep you and your family safer while on the road.
1. Before driving a car, do a simple safety check. Turn on the lights and walk around the vehicle to ensure that all lights are in working order. Also check your blinkers for proper operation.
2. When driving a car, adjust all mirrors and seats before placing the key in the ignition.
3. Seat belts are the key to road safety, so always wear your seat belts.
4. Replace windshield wipers that leave streaks or don’t clear the glass with a single swipe.
5. Before driving a car, check and adjust tire pressure to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended settings and don’t forget the spare.
6. Always drive with your headlights on. Driving a car with headlights on is visible nearly four times the distance even during daytime hours.
7. When a light turns green, look left, then right, straight ahead, then left again before proceeding through the light. Noticing all vehicles and ensuring no one is going to run the light is a key to road safety.
8. Keep your eyes moving. This is a much neglected car safety tip. Notice what is happening on the sides of the road and check behind you through your mirrors every six to eight seconds.
9. Drive Defensively! Expect other drivers to make mistakes when driving a car. Think what you would do if a mistake happens. For example, do not assume that a vehicle coming to a stop sign is going to stop.
10. Check your oil and other fluid levels frequently. Look for noticeable leaks throughout the engine compartment.
11. Remember, as your speed increases, so does your braking distance. If you double your speed, you quadruple your braking distance. If you double the weight of your vehicle, you double your braking distance.
Keeping these car safety tips in mind every time you get behind the wheel will help you, your family, and your fellow drivers be safer while on the road. Remember drive defensively!

Well done on sharing these important suggestions! As we near the festive season many road users will be sharing the roads - and these are precisely the suggestions that could keep them from harm. I will be sharing these with the road users in South Africa via the ArriveAlive.co.za website as well as via the Road Safety Arrive Alive Blog at roadsafety.wordpress.com!
